Five Creatures

Emily Jenkins
The five creatures in this story are a young girl, her mother and father, and their two cats. Through the book, the girl sorts the five of them in many different ways, from hair color to height, to which ones like fish or do not like to take baths to who can read. The illustrations encourage deductive reasoning, as the reader links the pictures to the text. For example, the girl describes “one who sings loud late at night”, with a picture of one of the cats in the window at night, and “one who sings in the morning”, with a picture of the father standing over the bathroom sink in his pajamas. Children could use this book as an example before sorting their own family’s characteristics.
