A young boy and his dog are flying through space and must fight off various obstacles using the 3-dimensional shapes at their disposal: cube, cone, pyramid, cylinder, rectangular prism, and sphere. For instance, when the two are bombarded with poison gas, they press the cone button and a cone shape comes out, sucking up all the poison gas through its circular base. This is a great introduction to learning to recognize and define geometric shapes, as they are not only separated into two categories: one with circular qualities (cone, sphere, cylinder) and one with rectangular qualities (cube, pyramid, rectangular prism), but the number of faces and shape of bases are also briefly touched on. Children can talk about the differences in the two rows of the space shape buttons (since they are not explicitly talked about in the book), or go on a shape scavenger hunt around the house, looking for objects that match each of the six shapes found in the book.

As you move through the book, on the right hand side of each page there are layers of shapes cut out that form animals. The name of the animal formed is written in large letters on that page, and then as you turn the page, the cut out shape has the name of the shape on the left hand side. This is a cute, colorful book that includes the shapes square, circle, rectangle, oval, triangle, hexagon, and octagon. My only negative for this book is that that author uses the term “diamond” instead of calling it a rhombus or parallelogram.
